Can Challenging Life Events Propel You into Your ‘Growth Zone’?

A powerful way to explore personal growth during tough times is through Karl Rohnke’s

insightful ‘Comfort, Stretch, and Panic’ model, based on the Yerkes-Dodson law.

Rohnke’s model reveals that our greatest achievements often arise when we experience just

the right amount of pressure—enough to nudge us out of our comfort zones but not so

much that we feel overwhelmed. Instead of remaining cosy or slipping into panic, it’s in that

optimal “stretch” zone where our true potential shines. Embracing this balance can

transform our approach to life’s challenges and unlock remarkable growth.

How does this relate to a relationship breakdown, and how can it become an opportunity

for growth?

Long-term relationships typically provide a sense of comfort, trust, safety, and familiarity—a

refuge free from fear or discomfort. While the comfort zone is a pleasant place, it often

lacks challenge. Are you still learning? Are you becoming the best version of yourself?

Rohnke’s model suggests that in this zone, self-reflection is minimal, and challenges are

scarce. Life tends to remain static; you might find yourself just “chugging along.”

On the opposite end of the spectrum lies the Panic Zone, where extreme stress, fear, and

challenge reign. In this state, learning becomes impossible as we fall into a ‘fight or flight’

response, leaving us frozen and overwhelmed. Many find themselves in this zone

immediately after a significant relationship breakdown, especially following conflict or

betrayal.

So, how can we harness the ‘Comfort, Stretch, and Panic’ model to rebuild our lives after

divorce?

The key is to thrive in the stretch zone—between comfort and panic. Here, we can

challenge ourselves with new activities and experiences that foster personal growth and

fulfilment. This might mean joining a new group, picking up a musical instrument, or diving

deep into self-exploration to understand our values and beliefs.

Partnering with a divorce and relationship coach during this pivotal time can guide you on a

journey of self-discovery. They can support you in making conscious choices and important

decisions, empowering you to create a future that excites you.
